Essay The Hermitage Have you ever been in Saint- Petersburg? Yes? And I have been. So you know about the Hermitage then – the most beautiful building of the city and (for me) of the world. It was built in the style of barocco by many architects during many years of XVIII and XIX centuries, in particular, by the great Italian architect Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli in 1756-1762, Jean-Baptiste Vallin de la Mothe in 1764-1767, Giacomo Antonio Domenico Quarenghi in 1783-1800, the Russian Master of Architecture K.A. Ton in 1838 and so on. This splendid ensemble of the beautiful edifices consists of five buildings, such as the Winter Palace, the Small Hermitage, the great (old) Hermitage, the new Hermitage and the Hermitage Theatre. All these magnificent monuments of Great Architecture are situated in the center of Saint-Petersburg, bordered by the eternally blue Neva on one part and by the unchangeably kingly the Palace Square on the other part. So lovely and harmonious view! It is my city and the dear place of my heart! All range of the buildings extends by one direct line along the quay of the Neva and has the appearance of an ellipse on the Place Square. It seems to me it is both a very beautiful and convenient to have them so kept together for needs of people and beauty of view! Also I think its elevated design of past centuries, when people in whole, and masters of architecture in particular, were able to create and value the true beauty, so, its design is the real treasure of human being’s thought and fantasy. The white columns and refined sculptures standing silently in their calm niches in the facades of Hermitage Theater and on roofs of the Winter Palace, call all who can hear to the fairy world of romantic dream and reality at once! If to tell about some minuses here (if they are), perhaps I would say about some interesting mixture of styles of various epochs in the exteriors and the interiors of the Hermitage. So, there are both barocco and classicism styles in the buildings because of built by different architects of different countries and periods of history. Although, maybe it is not a minus at all but a great plus!
